Are Alternating Reps Best For Building Muscle w/ Calisthenics?

Unilateral, progressive, and suspension calisthenics exercises are stable for any serious muscle building routine. I think an issue is that people do too much. They've been told that they need to do 3-5 sets. That they need to train 3-5x a week. Drink protein shakes and stock up on creatine. I do only 1 set and train for an hour twice a week and get results. It's basically the Jay Vincent protocol. It's a much smaller time investment, and costs less energy. I don't want to beat up my body. Or fight with myself to force myself to go to the gym because I'm feeling sore and have no energy or will to train. If I had to force myself or put in this huge commitment then I wouldn't last more than three months either. Much of it comes down to standard fitness advice being too much. I also hate stretching and warming up so I don't do it. You don't have to - unless you're feeling particularly stiff that day. Unfit people would get pretty far just doing push-ups alone. One set twice per week. They'll be done in minutes. Let them conquer this exercise first, it might take them a while before their wrists adapt. They could elevate their palms in the beginning, or get on their knees. Then take it from there. Add in another exercise, something you like to do. Diet? Just up protein and cut down carbs for weight loss. No need for cabbage or celery sticks. Fitness is so much easier than it's made out to be. If you begin where you're at and put in consistent effort without imitating or comparing yourself to Arnold Schwarzenegger then the results are gonna come. Most people don't need to do a lot.

    You can't take the I out of fitness. People lose sight of key drivers of success - do you enjoy it? does it fit your routine etc. Start there and the purpose of the science is to optimize.

    Nurse here. I've been able to maintain a healthy body weight for the past 40 years through a balanced diet and lifting. I kinda sorta got caught up in the carnivore diet this year. Let me tell you my results! I successfully gained 20 lbs of body fat and gave myself high cholesterol! I'm back to what works for me ( lean proteins and low fat dairy, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and beans). I've lost 15 lbs in 3 months. I have no idea what I was thinking other than I got caught up in the carnivore "science". Also, every time I eat a bowl of oatmeal, my bank account cries happy tears. Carnivore is expensive.

    Sprinting(SIT) is even better than HIT for burning fat in a timely manner. Adding one or two sprints to your workout, whether on a treadmill or a stationary bike/elliptical, could be all you need to burn off a few extra calories. It amounts to results over time. You just gotta stay consistent. There is also evidence it helps to build muscle systemically, meaning you get bigger biceps(to an extent) from sprinting alone. So there is value to "hacks" but you still gotta be consistent and put in the effort, as with anything else. I think that's the most important point to preach - consistency. Also safety and doing things that you enjoy so that you can stay consistent.

    • @oscarl.3563
      @oscarl.3563 День тому

      @@RedDeltaProject It's different due to the _intensity,_ and that's why the results are _significantly_ different. 'Runrepeat' has got a terrific article on it that goes through much scientific research, called: _"Sprint Interval Training: Burn 40% More Fat Than HIIT in 60% Less Time"_ And that's a good hack. It's not for everyone, but it's a good hack for some.

  • @oscarl.3563
    @oscarl.3563 День тому

    20 or 30 calories a day adds up. In a hundred days that's 2-3000 calories. A days worth. In a year it's a calorie deficit that equals 2 or 3 pounds. Or like fasting for three days. In ten years it's 20-30lbs. Like fasting for a full month. This could be all the weight loss one requires. Granted you probably wish to lose weight faster then this. Point being that small changes lead to good results over time, and you don't have to do more than that. You don't have to do very much at all. Cut out all processed junk food. Also cut out carbs in general and prioritize protein and you got your diet covered. Do a full body workout once a week - a single set per exercise to failure should be enough - and you will pretty much transform your body in two years.

    • @jonatanolsen37
      @jonatanolsen37 День тому

      Telling people that want to lose weight that they should avoid carbs is bad advice. Processed carbs, yes, but potatoes, whole grains, Sweet potatoes, Legumes and fruit has been proven to help with weightloss, increasing performance in the gym, keeping muscle mass and decreasing chance of cardiovascular disease.

    • @oscarl.3563
      @oscarl.3563 День тому

      @@jonatanolsen37 No, that's really bad science. But whatever, you do you. It's not like an apple is likely to kill you. Reducing carbs obviously helps with weight loss since carbs is a macro nutrient that provides the body with energy/calories, and yet they are without any nutritional value. They are inessential and at odds with our very tightly regulated blood sugar levels, meaning that if you eat a bunch of sugar the body has to squeeze out insulin to force glucose into the cell so that you don't die. You can only have like a tea spoon of sugar in your blood stream at any time. A few grams. Any more or less than that and you die on the spot, and you will never have less because a(healthy) liver is excellent at providing you with the glucose that you need. Your body won't let levels drop too low. Unlike fats which are essential to us, and there's practically no roof for how much lipids you can hold in your blood stream at any time. Proteins are also essential and also have a thermic effect meaning they're great for weight loss. There is also research showing that it's easier to lose weight cutting sugar and carbs then if you cut fat. But whatever works for you, if you require carbs on a daily basis then go for it. I'd avoid the fruits though, and most grains, and keep to rice, roots or tubers.

I can collect cans on the side of the road because “it all adds up” but Im certain all not going to do that because I’ve got far more effective ways to influence my weight that im going to put my attention on as you mentioned in the later part of your comment.

Anyhow, as a result I'd heard of scapula this and scapula that, as well as rotation, but your explanation, by making it visually explicit, is extremely helpful. Thank you! Yes, 6 months on and still attempting to get back to 90% of where I was. Have been told 100% is just impossible. Well, maybe in some ways (given my age) but in others I'm planning 110%. Regarding your comments (Matt) on not wanting to isolate, wanting to integrate - is there not a danger if yiu are trying to fire every nuscle that blood pressure will spike to dangerous levels? As say compared to iso bicep curls where you just focus on contracting biceps? With the latter, if you are training for muscular development there is less chance of another muscle taking some of the stress and thereforexlessening ir on the target muscle
